If you are heading out for a night on the town in Eugene, think about checking out a new band or singer. If history is any indicator, tonight’s opening act could be the next big thing.
Eugene has been home base for an amazing array of talent over the years – artists from just about every musical genre. While some have moved on to other places, others have found the city to be a great place to live and create music.
Here are just a few artists who have made, or are making, Eugene their home base:
Black Francis, formerly known as Frank Black when he was the lead singer of the Pixies, recently released a solo album, “Bluefinger” and lives in Eugene.
Christian recording artist Mat Kearney left Eugene for college, but eventually found both his spirituality and his musical talent and now resides in Nashville. His song “Breathe In Breathe Out” was featured on “Grey’s Anatomy” in 2007.
While Curtis Salgado may operate out of Portland, he’ll forever be tied to Eugene thanks to a chance meeting with John Belushi, who was in the city to film “Animal House.” After seeing Salgado’s act, Belushi came up with the idea for the Blues Brothers. In fact, the duo’s first album is dedicated to Salgado.
Other area notables include Sleater-Kinney’s Corin Tucker, who hails from Eugene.
